Domain and Hosting Basics: The Difference, Indonesian .id Domains and Costs

A plain-English guide to domains and hosting for business owners — the difference, how they connect, Indonesian domain types (.co.id, .biz.id, .my.id) and renewal costs.

A domain is the website address people type into a browser, and hosting is the server where the website's files are stored and served. Think of a shop: the domain is the street address and the hosting is the building. A website needs both, and both are usually rented by the year.

How domains and hosting connect

When someone types yourbusiness.com, the browser asks the DNS (Domain Name System): “which server does this domain point to?”. DNS replies with the hosting server's address, and the browser fetches the page from that server. That is why a domain and hosting can be bought from different places — as long as the DNS settings are correct.

Domain types commonly used by businesses in Indonesia

Domain Who it is for Notes
.com Anyone The most widely recognised internationally
.co.id Businesses operating in Indonesia Per PANDI: requires an NIB (business ID number) and an ID card/passport
.biz.id Individuals or businesses at MSME level Allocated by PANDI specifically for MSMEs
.my.id Individuals, organisations or other entities Good for personal portfolios
.web.id The general public A flexible Indonesian alternative

For .biz.id, .my.id and .web.id, PANDI's policy lists no specific documents, though registrars may still verify your identity. If a domain relates to a trademark, PANDI requires a trademark certificate or a power of attorney from the trademark holder.

Tips for choosing a domain name

  • Match your business name. Customers guess your address from the name they remember.
  • Keep it short and easy to spell. Avoid digits and hyphens that are confusing when spoken.
  • Check your brand and social accounts. Try to use the same name as your Instagram or TikTok handle.
  • Secure it early. Good names are taken quickly.

Hosting types in brief

  • Shared hosting: one server shared by many websites. Cheap, but your speed can be affected by others.
  • VPS / cloud server: server resources dedicated to you. More stable, but needs technical management.
  • Hosting with a CDN (a network of servers in many locations): pages are served from the server closest to the visitor, so they load faster. Websites built by PintuWeb use cloud hosting with a CDN.

Mistakes that cost business owners

  1. Domain registered in the developer's name. If the relationship ends, moving the domain can be hard. Ask for it to be registered in your name and keep the account access.
  2. Forgetting the renewal date. A domain that is not renewed can stop working and, after the grace period, be registered by someone else.
  3. Not knowing the year-two cost. Ask up front what renewal costs, not just the first-year price.

How much does it cost?

At PintuWeb, the domain and hosting for the first year are included in every website package (digital invitations use a personal link and need no domain). From the second year, renewal costs roughly IDR 300,000–500,000 per year depending on the package, and we remind you before it is due. Package details are on the Pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move my domain to another provider?

Yes. A domain can be transferred between registrars as long as you hold the account access and its authorisation code — which is why it must be in your name.

Is business email (name@yourbusiness.com) part of the domain?

The domain lets you use an email address with your business name, but the mailbox service itself is usually provided separately. Ask during the consultation if you need it.

Which is better for SEO, .com or .co.id?

Both can rank on Google. A .id ending helps signal that you target Indonesia, while .com is more universally familiar. Choose what fits your name and market best.
