Building a small business website comes down to seven steps: set the goal, choose the type of website, secure the domain, prepare the content, design and build, optimise for Google, and look after it once it is live. You do not need to code to follow these steps; what matters most is a clear goal and ready content.
Why small businesses need a website now
According to the 2025 survey by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), Indonesia has 229,428,417 internet users, or 80.66% of the population. Meanwhile, the Ministry of MSMEs counts about 65.5 million micro, small and medium enterprises contributing 61.9% of GDP. Customers are already online — and so is the competition for their attention.
Social media helps you reach people, but a website gives you an official address that can be found on Google and that you fully control. We compare the two in website vs social media.
Step 1 — Set one main goal
Write one sentence: “This website exists so that visitors …”. For example:
- … order products via WhatsApp.
- … trust us and ask for a quote.
- … find our location and opening hours.
This goal decides which pages you need and which button stands out most.
Step 2 — Choose the simplest type of website
| Need | Type of website | From at PintuWeb |
|---|---|---|
| Promote one product or event | Landing page | IDR 600,000 |
| Introduce your business & services | Company profile | IDR 1,500,000 |
| Sell many products | Online store | IDR 2,500,000 |
| Show personal work | Portfolio | IDR 1,500,000 |
If in doubt, choose the simpler option. A website can grow later.
Step 3 — Register the domain in your business's name
A domain is your website address, such as yourbusiness.com. Choose a name that is short, easy to spell and matches your business name. For Indonesian domains, PANDI (the .id registry) allocates .co.id to registered businesses (requiring a business identification number, NIB, and an ID card) and .biz.id to micro, small and medium enterprises. More in our domain and hosting guide.
Most importantly: make sure the domain is registered in your name, not the web developer's.
Step 4 — Prepare the core content
Content is the most common cause of delays. Prepare:
- A 3–5 sentence business description: who you are, what you sell and for whom.
- A list of products or services, with prices if you want to show them.
- Real photos: products, premises, team. Bright phone photos are good enough.
- Contact details: WhatsApp number, email, address, opening hours.
- Proof: genuine customer testimonials, certificates or press coverage, if any.
If anything is missing, we can write copy from a short brief.
Step 5 — Design and build
Good design for a small business is not the busiest one, but the one that helps visitors understand quickly and act easily:
- Design for phones first, since most visitors arrive on one.
- One clear main button, such as “Order on WhatsApp”.
- Fast pages; Google recommends the main content appears within 2.5 seconds.
At PintuWeb, you approve the design before the build starts, and you can open the preview yourself throughout.
Step 6 — Optimise for Google
A new website needs help to be found: clear page titles and descriptions, a sitemap, HTTPS, a mobile-friendly layout, and registration in Google Search Console. The full list is in our new website SEO checklist.
If you have a physical location, also create a Google Business Profile so you appear on Google Maps and in local search.
Step 7 — Look after it after launch
A website that is never updated slowly falls behind. Schedule simple updates: new prices and products, fresh photos, an occasional article, and checking that forms and the WhatsApp button still work. Note the domain and hosting renewal date too; at PintuWeb it costs about IDR 300,000–500,000 per year from the second year, and we remind you before it is due.
Frequently asked questions
Can a small business build its own website?
Yes, with a website builder. The trade-off is that you handle the design, writing and SEO settings yourself, and design and feature options are limited. A web developer saves time and usually delivers a faster, tidier website.
How long until a website appears on Google?
A new website usually starts being indexed within 1–2 weeks of submitting it to Google Search Console. Rankings grow gradually with helpful content.
What should I prepare before contacting a web developer?
Your goal, business name, a short description, a list of products or services, photos and contact details. Examples of websites you like also help a lot.
